Environmental Planning

Summerland recognizes that its natural environment is important for supporting many plants and wildlife that depend on a naturally functioning and healthy environment. Natural features also contribute to the urban environment in terms of the character and charm of the community, and add to the quality of life that the community enjoys, including the natural viewscapes, wildlife observation, hiking and other recreational activities. A healthy, natural environment also provide benefits to society and the economy by providing ecological or environmental services such as pollination, dilution, detoxification, pest control, erosion prevention, as well as soil, air and water renewal services “free of charge”. Summerland is working to protect, restore and enhance its natural environment through community planning and development that is sensitive to environmentally sensitive areas and valuable resources.

The District of Summerland is working to combat climate change through planning initiatives that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions at the corporate and community level. A local government is responsible for providing an environmentally, economically, and socially sustainable community for current and future residents. Choices made now will determine future costs and benefits to a community. Investing in Community and Corporate Climate Action Plans will enlighten decision-making and show the benefits of a sustainable community.
The District of Summerland is committed to moving towards carbon neutrality in municipal operations by 2012.
